If you get tired of hiking or relaxing by the house, there
are innumerable local activities to keep you occupied. In
the winter, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing,
hiking, snowmobiling and hunting await. In the summer, sailing,
mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, tennis, golf,
photography, square dancing, live theater, hunting, and myriad
other pastimes are within easy reach.
A few miles east of the house you will hit Route 16, which heads south
into Ossippee, then east to Freedom,
or north to Conway.
The nearby town of Tamworth
(population 2,510) dates back to 1766, and features the lovely
Cook
Library, Remick’s Store, the Other Store, and the
Barnstormer’s
Theater, which boasts that it is “the oldest professional
summer theatre in the country.” The Tamworth Town Hall
hosts historic square dancing and contra dancing on the second
floor on Saturday nights.
Travel west and you’ll hit Moultonborough in about
15 minutes and Meredith in 25 minutes. Both towns lie on Lake
Winnipesauke, a huge lake with countless islands, inlets,
bays and beaches. The entire region around Squam
Lake is also full of hikes, water sports, and mountains
with breathtaking views.
Finding things to do is not the problem; making a choice is
what’s hard. The whole area features swimming, boating,
sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, rafting, hiking,
biking, golfing, horseshoes, miniature golf, amusement parks,
fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, shopping,
restaurants, live theater, cinemas, museums, sightseeing,
along with attractions like Castle
in the Clouds, Fun Spot, Polar Caves, and Story Land.
Ski areas
are plentiful and close. You can stay at our house and drive
to a multitude of resorts
within easy driving distance, yet remain out of congested
tourist areas. |
